News12 Long Island: Panel recommends depression screening during, after pregnancy. An influential government health panel is now recommending that all pregnant women and new moms be screened for depression.

Bridget Croteau says that after giving birth to her now-4-year-old daughter Natalie, there were more bad days than good. She was diagnosed with what used to be known as postpartum depression. It's now called perinatal mood and anxiety disorder because recent studies show that this type of depression can affect a woman not just after their child is born, but also during pregnancy.

Read this Yahoo Parenting article by Jennifer O'Neill.  Since Hayden Panettiere and husband Wladimir Klitschko welcomed daughter Kaya in December, the new mom has been candid about her struggle to get back on even footing. And on Tuesday, the 26-year-old’s rep told People that she “is voluntarily seeking professional help at a treatment center as she is currently battling postpartum depression.”

Screening women for symptoms of depression shortly after giving birth may fail to identify those at high risk to develop postpartum depression in later months, says a study in the Annals of Family Medicine.
